KUALA LUMPUR (politicsnowmy) - The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, has revealed that it was a police security officer and not his personal bodyguard who assaulted a physically handicapped e-hailing driver earlier this week.
He lashed out at "a movement" to tarnish the royal institution, giving details of how he had "immediately urged the Royal Malaysian Police security escort team to cooperate with investigations" - while demanding justice for the victim..
"With reference to the incident that happened at St Regis Hotel Kuala Lumpur on 28 May 2024, I was informed the following day and I immediately urged the Royal Malaysian Police security escort team to cooperate with investigations," Tunku Ismail said in a statement posted on his official X account (https://x.com/HRHJohorII/status/1796440631730188482).
"I do not condone any illegal action or intimidation. I urge the authorities to investigate thoroughly the incident where a police officer escort is alleged to have committed a harmful act. I hope the authorities will take action in accordance with the law and give the victim justice.
"With this, I urge all quarters to allow the authorities to carry out the investigation. I am also aware that there is a movement to drag the royal institution by using this incident, but to link the actions of an external security personnel with myself and the entire royal institution is uncalled for."
COVER-UP ACCUSATIONS RAGE ON
Victim Ong Ing Keong
Indeed, the local media has been buzzing with stories over the incident, with some raking past incidents that involved bullying by royals.
The 46-year-old victim, Ong Ing Keong, had filed a police report, which was shared on social media by a whistleblower website amid allegations of a cover-up due to the sensitivity of the matter.
In his first report, Ong who was waiting for passengers, had claimed that the assault took place when an escort in Tunku Ismail's security detail had ordered him to move his vehicle.
A second report was lodged later the same night, with Ong stating that the matter had been resolved and he did not wish to prolong the case.
Ong has on Friday evening (May 31) revealed to a press conference that it was the police who had prepared the second report and instructed him to sign it.
According to Malaysiakini, Ong also claimed that a representative from the palace was present at the police station.
Federal Criminal Investigation Department chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has said the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which relates to voluntarily causing hurt.
