KUALA LUMPUR - A member of the Lim Kit Siang family is back in the Finance Ministry after the DAP supremo's son, Guan Eng, last held the important portfolio from 2018 to 2020.
But while Guan Eng was Finance Minister, his 60-year-old sister Hui Ying will be deputy finance minister - reporting to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself as he is also Finance Minister.
“I would also like to thank the DAP leadership, especially secretary-general Anthony Loke who suggested my name to be appointed as a deputy minister," Hui Ying wrote on Facebook.
“The appointment is a new challenge for me and I will do my best to fulfil this mandate based on the vision and principles of the unity government and the Prime Minister
“The people have high hopes on the ministers and deputy ministers as the unity government is given the responsibility to protect the wellbeing of the public and the country.
“I will carry this trust and responsibility to the best of my ability and give priority, high commitment and the best service to all Malaysians.”
Hui Ying will also work under the new Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah, the former CEO of the EPF pension fund.
She was previously the Deputy Education Minister and is also the member of parliament for Tanjong as well as a former Penang Dap secretary.
Her appointment comes two years after her brother held the Finance Minister's post during the previous Pakatan Harapan administration helmed by former premier Mahathir Mohamad.
Pakatan had first swept to power after the 2018 Malaysian general election - and Mahathir had announced Guan Eng's appointment, making him the first Malaysian Chinese in decades to hold the key post.
Guan Eng had succeeded corruption-tainted ex-premier Najib Razak, who was also Finance Minister, before the Umno-BN regime was finally ousted after nearly 6 decades in power.
Guan Eng held on to the position until 2020 when the Pakatan regime was ousted by a 'coup' led by Muhyiddin Yassin.
He later revealed that Mahathir had threatened to sack him as finance minister for pursuing three reform initiatives during Pakatan maiden federal administration from 2018 to 2020.
