KUALA LUMPUR (Politics Now!) -  Accused of being a lackey of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his 'Madani' government, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has lodged a police report against an opposition politician.

According to the MACC, false claims were allegedly uttered by Terengganu Bersatu chief Razali Idris during a speech made on Nov 10 at the launch of party's machinery for the Kemaman by-election.

“During the ceramah (speech), Razali had alleged that government machinery, the MACC and judges are controlled by the government," the MACC said in a statement.

“He also questioned a High Court judge’s decision in relation to the four charges against a former youth and sports minister.”

It is believed the former minister mentioned was Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, although no name was stated.

The popular Syed Saddiq, who had fallen out with Anwar's Madani government, had the day before been sentenced to a total of nine years' jail, two strokes of the cane and slapped with a RM10 million fine for abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of funds and money laundering.

“With the report lodged, the MACC hopes that appropriate action will be taken against those who utter and spread the slander against the agency,” said the MACC.

Razali’s remarks had been posted on TikTok under the account holder @wancin11. The Kemaman by-election was called after the courts nullified the victory of Razali's coalition colleague - Che Alias Hamid of Pas - in last year's general election on the grounds there had been elements of corruption during the electoral campaign.

The Election Commission has set polling for the by-election on Dec 2, while the nomination is on Nov 18 and early voting on Nov 28.
