KUALA LUMPUR (politicsnowmy.blogspot.com) - Najib Razak, Rosmah Mansor, Zahid Hamidi and Musa Aman – what do these people have in common? They were all crooked UMNO figures who had allegedly stolen billions through corruption, yet they have been freed, or about to walk free from prison and spend the remaining of the jail sentence in the comfort of home, or even rewarded with the governorship. And the man who helps them is none other than PM Anwar Ibrahim.
Last week (Dec 19), Malaysia’s High Court acquitted Rosmah of 17 money laundering and tax evasion charges involving a total of RM7 million, a decision that she hailed as a birthday gift to herself and her husband, disgraced ex-PM Najib. It is both puzzling and disgusting that none of the 17 charges stick in a case where a jobless housewife received a massive RM7,097,750 in her bank account.
After a six-year legal battle, it’s not only a mockery of the Malaysian judiciary system, but also an insult to the 34 million people’s intelligence for the high-profile case to end with a shameful acquittal. That’s the beauty of the culture of corruption in this country, where the Public Prosecutor is the same Attorney General, who in turn reports to the Prime Minister.
Attorney General - Tommy Thomas (left) and Idrus Harun (right)
Since the resignation of former Attorney General Tommy Thomas in February 2020 following the infamous “Sheraton Move” coup, which led to the collapse of democratically-elected Pakatan Harapan government, subsequent political-appointee attorney generals appeared to have been promoted with a specific mission – to free all UMNO crooks prosecuted by Thomas.
For example, thanks to backdoor PM Muhyiddin’s appointment of Idrus Harun as the successor to Thomas, Riza Aziz (stepson of Najib) received a stunning discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on May 14, 2020. Riza was required to return US$107.3 million (RM465.3 million) worth of overseas assets which he acquired using stolen money as part of a settlement. After stealing US$248 million, he just needed to return 43% of his loot.
Less than a month after freeing Riza, despicable A.G. Idrus decided on June 9, 2020 to free another big crooked fish – former Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman. Under the instruction of the Attorney General’s Chambers, all 46 corruptions and money-laundering charges against Musa were dropped. Hilariously, last month, Anwar appointed the same Idrus as one of the members of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC).
Musa Aman – Former Sabah Chief Minister - Corruption
The best part was not about crooked Musa’s acquittal. The best part is the reward or gift – Governor of Sabah – for the former corruption-tainted UMNO warlord. This brings back the sad chapter where another former corrupt leader of Borneo – Sarawak former Chief Minister Taib Mahmud – was appointed as Governor of Sarawak instead of being charged with plundering the state for 33 years.
Two ex-Chief Ministers – one who ruled Sabah for 15 years and another who ruled Sarawak for 33 years – have been promoted as Governors, even after enriching themselves through corruption. Adding salt to the injury, Anwar Ibrahim, a so-called reformist who had previously expressed concerns over Musa’s acquittal, now sings a different tune by defending Musa’s appointment.
However, the PM’s flip-flopping was plagued with contradictions. First, Anwar told all and sundry that he was powerless because Musa was appointed at the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King). He said it was not his fault that Musa was acquitted in 2020 by then-PM Muhyiddin. Then, his own party – PKR or People’s Justice Party – defended that Musa should be given a chance.
Anwar Ibrahim Meets Sultan of Johor -Kissing Hand
When things got ugly, Anwar suddenly claimed that he had actually proposed several candidates to King Sultan Ibrahim for consideration as the new Sabah governor, but apparently the monarch had rejected everyone except Musa Aman. But it was Anwar who argued less than 24 hours earlier that he had no power to interfere with the appointment of Sabah governor.
So, how could Anwar interfere by proposing other candidates despite his own argument that he cannot interfere in the first place? Does that mean the Agong preferred a crook as Sabah governor? Even if the premier wants to lie, he should get his story right. If he disagreed with Musa candidacy, he should make his stance known, and not say one thing in front of the people, and do another thing with the monarch.
Taib and Musa was not the only ex-chief ministers rewarded. Mohd Ali Rustam, formerly Chief Minister of Melaka, too was rewarded in a similar fashion. He was appointed as the seventh Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka (equivalent to Governor) on June 4, 2020, replacing Mohd Khalil Yaakob (who was also another former UMNO Chief Minister of Pahang). Ali Rustam has been re-appointed for a second term in May 2024 as the Melaka “Governor”.

Because Yang di-Pertua and Governor are the Head of State, they also come with “Tun” title – the most senior federal title in Malaysia, which grants them “unofficial immunity” from prosecution. It’s the reward for the mega-rich UMNO scumbags to retire peacefully. If only Sultan can be appointed, you can bet your last penny that all former prime ministers would have become sultans today.
Therefore, it was not hard to understand why people were furious with the appointment of Musa Aman as Sabah Governor and the acquittal of Rosmah Mansor within 24 hours apart. It smells like rotten fish all the way to the Prime Minister Office. Despite PM Anwar’s denial of interference to free Rosmah and reward Musa, very few believe he did not secretly intervene.
In fact, the more the prime minister explains and justifies his innocence, the more guilty and contradictory he sounds. He might not have directly called up judges to tell them what to do, but that does not mean his governing partner UMNO did not do so. PM Anwar does not need to do all the dirty jobs himself, but simply endorses one of his proxies or lemmings to do whatever it takes to cling to power.
Najib Razak and Rosmah Mansor
Even though newly appointed A.G. Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said his office will appeal the acquittal of Rosmah, it was an “afterthought” damage control PR stunt after public uproar. At first, the premier dismissed claims that he influenced the Kuala Lumpur High Court to acquit and discharge Rosmah. Yet, within 24 hours, he defended Rosmah with dubious excuse that charges against her was rushed and flawed.
Has Anwar, formerly a radical student who graduated in Malay Studies, suddenly becomes a legal eagle qualified to decide that all the 17 money laundering and tax evasion charges against Rosmah was flawed and were done in a rush? He said the prosecution of several cases following the 2018 General Election, which saw ex-PM Mahathir led Pakatan Harapan in crushing Barisan Nasional, was done “with such venom and enmity”.
His statement clearly screams envy and vendetta against Mahathir Mohamad. Did he realize that his wife – Wan Azizah – was the Deputy Prime Minister under the Mahathir administration after the victorious 2018 national polls that prosecuted Najib, Rosmah, Zahid and Musa? Had either Anwar or his wife openly rejected the so-called flawed and rushed prosecution against Rosmah to begin with?

Heck, the prime minister had kept his silence not only from May 2018 to November 2022 (during which Pakatan defeated Barisan and formed a new government, before losing power to backdoor regime of Perikatan Nasional through treachery and coup), but also continued his silence for another two years during his own administration from November 2022 till the acquittal of Rosmah this month.
On the contrary, chameleon Anwar had praised the prosecution of Najib as an example of “people’s power” and even assured the world that the trial against Najib would be fair. On several occasions, Anwar whined, moaned and bitched about how much money crooked Najib had robbed and stolen from the people. He also joked that his former jail cell was waiting for Najib.
When Najib was first convicted by the High Court over the SRC International case on July 28, 2020, and ultimately lost his final appeal in the Federal Court and sent to Kajang Prison on August 23, 2022, Mr Anwar happily announced it as a “major victory” for Malaysians. However, when the PKR president becomes the 10th Prime Minister in Nov 2022, he started to flip-flop.

Yes, Anwar must be retarded for praising and celebrating the prosecution of Najib and his wife for a jaw-dropping period of 6 years (May 2018 to December 2024), before suddenly realizing this month that both crooks are actually prophet and angel, which coincides with pressure from rival-turned-ally UMNO to free their former president and self-proclaimed FLOM (First Lady of Malaysia).
In the same breath, the premier had previously said that the decision to withdraw all 47 charges against Zahid was the sole discretion of then Attorney-General Idrus Harun. But despite his fake claims that he won’t interfere in the judiciary process, the same power crazy man has slammed the prosecution against Zahid as politically motivated, flawed and rushed when he now depends on UMNO’s support to cling to power.
The decision by the prosecutors on December 12 (just a week before Rosmah’s acquittal) to withdraw their appeal against Zahid’s acquittal by the Shah Alam High Court in September 2022 of 40 charges in a foreign visa corruption case was so obvious that the Anwar government was working hand-in-glove with the Attorney General’s Chambers to fully free the UMNO president from jail sentence.
Anwar Ibrahim (left) with Zahid Hamidi (right)
So, if the prosecutors could withdraw an appeal against Zahid’s acquittal whenever they like, what makes you think the same corrupt Attorney General’s Chambers will not withdraw its appeal against Rosmah’s acquittal later? Worse, Anwar sounds like a corrupt UMNO leader when he foamed at the mouth vigorously accusing that prosecution of several cases (obviously referring to Najib, Rosmah and Zahid) was rushed and flawed.
Anwar can huff and puff in denial about freeing crooks, and can even play tai-chi behind the King to wash his hands about rewarding crooks. But he lies too much and too often that it is hard to believe him anymore. He has a serious deficit of trust. He keeps saying he does not interfere in the Judiciary. But he didn’t say UMNO can’t interfere with the Judicial and Attorney General to free Najib, Rosmah and Zahid.
If Anwar-appointed attorney general was clueless, useless, corrupt and incompetent, the most powerful man should sack him instead of evading responsibility by finger-pointing. One thing Anwar should stop doing is keep insulting people’s intelligence. The fact remains that under his watch, Rosmah gets her acquittal, Zahid gets his freedom, Musa gets his governorship, and soon Najib will get his bungalow vacation. The PM should resign if he’s so pathetically weak and lame.
